Background:
Following the end of the UN COP15 negotiation in Copenhagen last year, China and the rest of the world are ushering in the new era of pursuing low-carbon economy. The results of the negotiation does not hinder the continued advancement each nation’s green agenda. In order to achieve sustainable low-carbon growth, one should realize the key importance of restructuring the energy system and developing clean energy. As future leaders, young people play a critical role in the field of energy and climate change. International Youth Summit on Energy and Climate Change (IYSECC) would provide an unparalleled platform for communication and interaction for youth from China and all over the world on a range of issues such as clean-tech and renewable energies, low-carbon economy, and post-Copenhagen climate negotiation.
History:
IYSECC, as part of “Our-Opportunity” 2009 World Youth Energy Forum series initiated by Stanford University Energy Crossroads, was the first international youth conference independently organized by Chinese students. The first summit was held in Tsinghua University in July 18-20th, 2009, with a special focus on China’s energy and climate change challenges and opportunities.
This year:
With the focus on “The world’s vision of a carbon efficient future start with the youth”, this year’s IYSECC will explore the development of clean energy, progress of international climate negotiations, and the opportunities in low-carbon era. The summit would engage youth from all over the world in an array of intriguing activities, such as regional research, keynote speeches, panels, youth networking sessions, green exhibition, cultural nights, model climate negotiation games, and field trips, etc.
Highlights
1、Carbon neutral conference: voluntary carbon offset by purchasing VCUs according the conference board estimation.
2、Practice: In order to facilitate youth activities in energy and climate fields, the conference board will support 6 research teams to conduct energy, low carbon economy and urban construction research projects prior to the conference. The results will be published in specific section of the conference.
3、Frontier of low carbon development: The Summit invites government authorities, academia, industries experts to analyze low carbon economy development situation and the future of clean energy.
4、Climate negotiation: The Summit introduces climate negotiation background and different interest groups to participants in order to bring more youth into international climate negotiation field.
5、Opportunities: The Summit will invite UN officials, NDRC/MEP officials, climate negotiators from Chinese delegation, renowned academia experts, green technology entrepreneurs, executives from climate change NGO and media which offer excellent opportunities to explore a whole new industry, to keep updated with climate change policies, to conduct cross-sectors communications with youth and experts.
